Our Hearts, Our Mission
1000 Hearts of Kindness Inc is a social enterprise (a business that puts people and planet first) and a community. We believe that small acts of kindness have a powerful impact, creating a groundswell of change for a more compassionate world. A large body of research gives this belief a firm grounding in science.
Our hearts are our language of kindness, and we offer them as a symbol of care. They are made with love and carry this message with them.
Our mission is to share the benefits of kindness far and wide. We do this by making hearts with love and sharing them with anyone who needs a little kindness. A heart full of love is the best kind of heart, even if they're a little wonky or imperfect.
1000 Hearts is a global kindness community which started in 2016 from a random act of kindness...
I started making hearts because I was tired of feeling helpless in the face of pain and grief. I wanted to bring some comfort and hope to people who were struggling.
When I began 1000 Hearts, I hand-stitched one thousand pocket hearts to give away at no cost to anyone who requested them.
1000 Hearts exists to make people happier and healthier by sharing kindness in a simple and tangible way. We make and share pocket hearts that people can hold onto as a reminder that someone cares.
The Science and the Magic
1000 Hearts is embedded in powerful scientific evidence showing the mental and physical health benefits of kindness, community and hand-stitching. Making and sharing hearts are simple ways of showing compassion.
In Australia, around 43% of people have experienced a mental illness, 33% experience loneliness and nine die by suicide every day. These are not just numbers - they are distressed, isolated and struggling people.
